Excursion Stainbank nature reserve hike tour at Durban

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Experience the 253-hectare Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve, replete with abundant flora and fauna, on this half-day active tour.

Stainbank Nature Reserve

Embark from the pier for a short drive to the Stainbank Nature Reserve to begin your two and a half-hour guided hike through the beautiful reserve. Hike through the gorgeous grasslands and coastal forests of yellowwood tree, South Africa's national tree. The reserve, bequested by Kenneth Stainbank, is regarded as one of the finest coastal / riverine forest and bush clump / grassland mosaic areas remaining in the greater Durban area. Arrive at the dam area to see more water birds, including the red-chested flufftail. Climb into the forest area, where it is quieter and, with more patience, be rewarded with hopefully more bird sightings.

Coedmore Castle

On your way back enjoy a quick stop at Coedmore Castle. Dubbed Durban's "castle lite," Coedmore Castle is a beautiful historic homestead, built in 1875 and situated right in the center of the Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve. The old stone castle lies in amongst a series of giant yellowwood trees within the 253-hectare nature reserve in Yellowwood Park. Meander in and around the castle gardens, then head back to the gates and your coach for the drive back to the pier.
