The mouthwatering treats known as pierogi first appeared In a Polish cookbook in 1682 – and have been tantalizing palates ever since. Goldwasser liqueur has been around even longer, its original recipe of aromatic root herbs and gold flakes dating from 16th-century Danzig. This culinary outing will leave you an expert on making the dumplings and having sipped the elixir.
After a half-hour coach transfer from the pier to Gdansk Old Town, you’ll walk with your guide to Gdanski Bowke Restaurant – a bastion of authentic Polish cuisine and the traditional cooking techniques used to make it. During a 90-minute workshop here, you’ll learn the essentials to creating sumptuous pierogi – pockets of unleavened dough wrapped around savory or sweet fillings and cooked in boiling water. The restaurant’s chefs know the classic recipes inside and out, so you’ll not only learn how to craft three different flavors of these delicious morsels but also gain a cultural perspective on the traditions behind them. At the end of the session, enjoy eating your creations as you sip a glass of typical Polish compote, a delightful beverage made from stewed fruits.
Just a 10-minute stroll away is Goldwasser Restaurant, an atmospheric eatery on the banks of the Motlawa River, close to the historic Gdansk Crane. It’s here that you’ll be introduced to the restaurant's namesake spirit – a root and herbal liqueur made with tiny flakes of actual gold suspended in it. During your 30-minute stopover at this cozy venue, you’ll learn much about the intriguing history of this signature Gdansk concoction that has been around for well over four centuries – and sample some Goldwasser yourself before the short walk to where the coach waits to transport you back to your ship at the port.
